Competition

We belong to the Johnny Appleseed District which comprises Western Pennsyvania, Ohio, West Virginia and the northern tip of Kentucky. Competitions are a major and fun part of the barbershop experience that helps keep us focused on raising the bar of performing excellence. We come together in a spirit of lighthearted contest, to see who's really got top form. We root for each other, cheer each other on, and once the medals have been handed out, we sing and party into the night!

Spring Convention/International Prelims

This convention has two major components: One is to pick the quartets – both ‘Open’ and ‘College’ quartets – that go to the International competition in July. (This is different from the Quartet District Championship which happens at the Fall convention)

The other component is the District Chorus Championship and the District Senior Quartet Championship. The Chorus Championships are currently contested in 4 ‘plateau’ levels based on previous contest results.

This Convention is held in April, at a location that can change from year to year.

To summarize, here are the competitions you can expect to see at this Convention:

– Open Quartet International qualifying

– College Quartet International qualifying

– District Senior Quartet Championship (Senior Quartet qualifying to MidWinter Convention happens at the Fall Convention)

– District Chorus Championships – 4 Plateaus (Chorus International qualifying is also in the Fall)

– High-School Quartet: The top-scoring high-school competitors have the honor of being declared JAD High-School champs for the current year.

This year the contest is being held on April 10 & 11, 2015 in Cincinnati, OH.  With a new director we're taking a year off and hope to possibly compete in April of 2016 when the contest comes to the south hills of Pittsburgh being hosted in Bethel Park, PA at Peters Township High School.

Fall District Convention/Contest

The District Contest is held in mid-October each year. Its location can change from year to year. What do district winners actually win? Well, the Chorus Champions win the right to represent the district at next year’s international contest and convention. The district Quartet Champs earn the title, the admiration of everyone in the district, and bragging rights for a year. But the district quartet championship has nothing to do with determining the quartets that represent the district at next year’s international contest. That’s accomplished at another JAD contest, the “Spring Prelims.” Finally, the highest-scoring Senior Quartet at the District Contest will represent JAD at the Midwinter Convention.

About the JAD Fall Convention and Contest:

At the JAD Fall Convention the District HOD meeting will be held on Friday afternoon.  Tag singing, gang singing, meeting new and old friends, the opportunity to sing with the famed JAD Mic Tester Chorus, attend hospitality rooms, and more is all part of what awaits you at this year’s Fall Convention.

Chorus Contest:  The JAD Chorus Champions win the right to represent the district at next year’s international contest and convention. However, this contest is open to ALL JAD Chapter Choruses, of all levels of performance ability and size. So bring your chorus and entertain before the best barbershop audience in the world. It’s great fun!

Quartet Contest:  The district Quartet Champs earn the title, the admiration of everyone in the district, and bragging rights for a year. But the district quartet championship has nothing to do with determining the quartets that represent the district at next year’s international contest. That’s accomplished at another JAD contest, the “Spring Prelims.”

Senior Quartet Contest:  The highest-scoring Senior Quartet at the Fall District Contest will represent JAD at the International Midwinter Convention.

International Convention & Contests

Every summer, usually over the 4th of July a host city within the Barbershop Harmony Society (within the 50 states and Canada) welcomes choruses and quartets from all over the world (and their families) to a week-long convention to choose the International Quartet and Chorus Champions.Barbershop Harmony Society
