Meet our new director, Ron Brooks.

Ron is married to his lovely and talented wife Lynda (whom he met while she was singing in a Sweet Adeline chorus). They have a 16 year old son David who not only sings with them in a mixed quartet and has joined the Bogmeisters along with his dad.

Ron joined the barbershop society 40 years ago with the Pennsylvania #1 chapter of the barbershop harmony society as a young boy of 11. A few years after he joined the chapter merged with the Pittsburgh East Suburban Chapter and became the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter. During his many years with the chapter he was very active and involved – he was the membership VP, in charge of public relations, wrote the chapter bulletin, was on the music committee, and became assistant director at age 16. At age 18 he was appointed as the head    musical director for the 90-member Greater Pittsburgh Three Rivers Chorus.

In that same year, 1982, he headed up the publicity committee for the Internationals held in Pittsburgh and wrote the lead story in the Harmonizer. He was chosen as a Barbershopper of The Year and inducted into the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter Hall of Fame.

In 1987 he received a call for help from some of his friends in the Butler, PA chapter, as they had lost their director and believed that they would likely fold if they didn’t have a show. In addition to his regular directing duties with the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter, he volunteered to help Butler and also got his home chorus and quartets to help out by performing on their show.

In 1990 he was looking for a change in scenery and became the full-time director of the still-struggling Butler chapter. Putting together a strong music committee and a new-found energy within six months, the chorus won the first of four small chorus championships in the Johnny Appleseed District during Ron’s tenure.

When his wife Lynda gave birth to their son in 1999 he decided that it was time to take a break and be a stay at home dad. After several years out of the mix he was getting the itch to help a chapter or quartet that might be interested in some coaching. At the same time he had sent out his offer Paul Shannon, the director of the 60 member Zanesville Y-City chorus in Ohio was thinking the same thing and asked if he would be interested in coaching their chorus on a regular basis. He agreed and started the nearly 6 hour round trip to Zanesville, Ohio about every other week. He started as the coach and by the second year he was asked to help with directing.

The last time the chorus had competed they finished last place in the divisional contest and hadn’t qualified for district competition in years. Within a few months they qualified for districts and finished in the top 10 in the JAD.

Wired for Sound and InCahootz are currently still active.  (pictured left & right).

In addition to being involved with singing barbershop and a cappella music Ron has been an extra in several feature films and he runs his own singing telegram business called Brooks Entertainment Singing Telegrams & More writing and performing singing telegrams and playing Santa. He enjoys photography and travel. After over 10 years being out of barbershop Ron is very excited to be back in the saddle again and proud to be a Bogmeister. Ron truly loves this hobby and the music and it shows when he’s upfront. He’s looking forward to many years of fun and musical excellence.
